Parent Teacher Conferences

Normally, our May conferences consist of a celebration of all the wonderful things going on at PS 88Q. Although we are not in the building, we are available remotely. Please fill out the form if your teachers have shared to schedule a time if you would like to speak individually about your child’s progress.

Citywide Grading Policy

I hope you are all safe and healthy at home.  Our Chancellor has just released the citywide grading policy for all schools.  The policy is attached.  I will be discussing this and open to all questions tomorrow at Coffee with Mrs. O’Shaughnessy at 11:00am and 4:00 pm.  Also, please feel free to email me any questions if you like!
As we enter week six of remote learning, what has proven successful is the amazing communication from all of our community.  Thank you for your patience, your understanding and most importantly your dedication to PS 88Q.  I am humbled every day with what your children are doing, and how remote learning has become more “together” than ever!

Thank you,

If your child is not feeling well, for any reason, it is always best policy to remain home. If you would like to continue the learning at home, we have many resources. We have prepared packets for your child as well as some online resources if you would like. Students have access to their I-Ready accounts at home as well as MYON. I know that nightly homework sometimes consists of these programs. The NYC DOE has also supplied a link for students who are at home. If you would like additional paper materials, please reach out to your teacher, and we can provide that.

PS 88Q Basketball Kicks Off Season

After their successful year last year, PS 88Q had basketball try-outs earlier in the year. Lasts years team was solely fifth graders, so the roster was empty! With over 40 students at try-outs, it became clear that basketball was something our students wanted ! With that many students, why not start our own league, with four teams. Twice a week these dedicated student athletes arrive at school at 7:00am for a rigorous practice and skills development from their dedicated coaches, Mr. Tripotseris and Mr. Nolan. To kick off the upcoming intra-mural games , our PS 88Q community came out for a pep rally. The entire team started their route in the cafeteria, proceeding to the first floor, second floor, third floor and then ending their tour on the fourth floor. They are definitely in shape for full court games now! How does it feel to get high-fives from almost 800 students? Here’s a look at it! #PS88qstrong

We are a CS For All School

PS 88Q is a proud participant in the Computer Science for All Initiative. During the week of December 9th, our CS Team had so many amazing activities both in school and after school. From Scratch, to Code.org to Coding with Cops (partnering with the 110Pct) , it was a wonderful week. All participants celebrated their excitement and commitment to CS this past week while claiming their certificates !

November Principal’s Book of the Month

Dear P.S. 88Q Families,                                                                                 November 2019

Happy November!  I hope everyone has transitioned from our warm weather to a more chilly temperature.  With the Fall, comes many holidays that we celebrate.  One in particular is Thanksgiving, which happens to be one of my favorite holidays.  What is there not to love about being surrounded by family, and most of all GRATITUDE.  This Thanksgiving, as well as every day, I am thankful for all the blessings I have in my life.  My two daughters, one of which will be home from college for the first time since August this Thanksgiving, and my oldest daughter who is even happier to see her sister than anyone.  I am thankful for my family and friends who support me on days I feel like I need help.  I am especially thankful for my PS 88Q family, who I see more than my family most days.  In these short 14 months, I have felt welcome, and part of something I could only dream of.  All of your smiling faces, friendly words and collaboration have ensured me that life surely is good!  THANK YOU!!

Our Principal Book of the Month for November is Giving Thanks by Chief Jake Swamp.  The words in this book are based on the Thanksgiving Address, an ancient message of peace and appreciation of Mother Earth and all her inhabitants, that are still spoken at ceremonial and governmental gatherings held by the Six Nations. These words of thanks come to us from the Native people known as the Haudenosaunee, also known as the Iroquois or Six Nations–Mohawk, Oneida, Cayuga, Onondaga, Seneca, Tuscarora. The people of the Six Nations are from upstate New York and Canada. According to the Canadian and U.S. census there are 74,518 Iroquois in North America.

The three Mohawk clans–Wolf, Turtle, Bear–in turn contain three sub-clans; they hail nine Chiefs in all (Chief Swamp is a Chief of the Wolf Clan) and nine clan mothers. In all the Six Nations, there are 50 Chiefs, each of whom is selected by clan mothers who observe children for leadership skills. The illustrations contain much symbolism. Two examples are: water, which symbolizes continuance because life forms depend on it; and the four winds, which are represented by different animals, i.e., the east by the moose, the west by the cougar, the south by the (gentle) deer, the north by the (strong) bear, and are considered to play a role in how crops grow.

The students will listen to this book during this month, and discussing it.  Some of the questions we ask the students are:

  • What are some things that you are thankful for? Where do these things come from and how do you receive them?
  • What do you appreciate about the earth and the environment?

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Mrs. O’Shaughnessy, Mrs. Lowe, Mrs. Palesty
