September 2019

Dear P.S. 88 Students,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year.  Everyone is excited to see you and even more excited about the wonderful year we will all have.  For some of you it is your first year at P.S. 88, and for others you are returning.  Last year was my first year, and what a year it was!  I learned about all the amazing things that are part of P.S. 88.  Mrs. Lowe, Mrs. Palesty, and I chose this month’s book because it speaks of the many opportunities we have at P.S. 88.  Some of you may not now about all of them, but would like to be part of them this year.

This month’s book is “The Happiest Tree: A Yoga Story”.  You may ask, “What is this about?”  It is about a young girl named Meena, who is chosen for a part in the school play, but uncomfortable.  Meena was chosen for the part of the tree, but she thinks she is too clumsy. She stumbles in rehearsal and does not feel comfortable.  One day she is shopping with her mother and she discovers a yoga class.  She signs up for the class, and at first, it is hard, but she gains confidence.   Let us read the book to find out what happens!

While reading this book think of the following questions.

  • Do you ever feel awkward and clumsy?  What causes you to feel this way?
  • What are some school performances you have participated in?  How do you feel about your performance?
  • Do you like to learn new things? What are some skills you have learned in the past year?

P.S. 88 has so many connections to this book.  We have an amazing Yoga program, which many of you have participated in.  We also have MANY opportunities to perform at P.S. 88.  Just this past year, our students participated in the play Annie, in the Law Club’s performance of The Boston Tea Party Trial, Chorus Performances, and Dance Team, Basketball Team, and class plays.  We are so lucky to have so many opportunities for everyone to shine!  As we start the new year, think of what you would like to participate in, and what you need to do to be ready!

We look forward to reading this book with you!

Mrs. O’Shaughnessy, Mrs. Lowe, Mrs. Palesty
